Top Ten Things Students Can Do In Southampton

Whether you’re more interested in world history, the current art scene, an attractive place to walk or a great place to eat, here are the top ten things students can do in Southampton. I’m confident you’ll love them all. Let’s dive in!

  1. Museums

Southampton has various museums, but let’s focus on the SeaCity Museum on Havelock Road.  If you want to learn more about the 1912’s White Star Liner, Titanic, then this is the place to be. The centerpiece of this gallery features a 1:25 scale, interactive model of the Titanic, showing the intricate layout of the vessel – now that will be something to take your cameras out for! With frequent events and refreshments on sight, make a day of your visit to the SeaCity Museum and place yourself in a part of history. The museum also has two other exhibitions – Gateway To The World and Southampton Stories, if you’re looking to enlighten yourself about  other histories surrounding Southampton.

  1. Cocktail and Pizza Bar

Not just your everyday one! They call it ‘the house of fun’ CRIB, Southampton’s shuffleboard, cocktail, and pizza bar, situated in the heart of Bedford Place. Games, drinks, and food, what more can you ask for? CRIB is the perfect setting for a unique student night out, with quirky decor and seasonally changing features to keep everything up to scratch. Whether you’re popping out for a quick drink with some friends, or you’re back for the 3rd that week no two nights are the same. Private hire or simply just book – grab some friends and go, go, go!

  1. Escape Rooms

There are more than 20 escape rooms in Southampton alone, but which is the one you’ll go crazy for? Houdini’s escape room experience, on Onslow Road. It’s a real-life escape game experience based on the Japanese online game, ‘Takagism’. Players are locked inside a themed room, and need to work as a team to solve a series of puzzles, riddles and hints in order to escape within the 60/90 -minute time limit. If you’re a sucker for adrenaline, a game fanatic or simply just love the thrill of being trapped inside a room, desperate to escape this one is definitely for you. Go check it out.

  1. Live Music

Everyone’s a music lover, am I right? Thankfully, Southampton boasts an array of venues. From the O2 Guildhall, to intimate little pubs and bars like The loft and The Joiners which host regular live music events. Go check out what’s on and mark the day in your diary!

  1. Alpine Snowsports Centre

The Alpine Snowsports Center, just a 10 minute drive from the city centre of Southampton, is a brilliant venue for new and experienced snowsports fans and enthusiasts. It’s artificial surface is perfect for Skiing, Snowboarding plus many other activities. It’s a guaranteed fun day out! With a passionate instructor team who can help you get started or push you further if you’re looking for a helping hand to improve – whatever your ski or snowboard experience level, it’s ideal for everyone. 

  1. Marwell Zoo

Are you an animal lover? Well, just 12 miles from Southampton in Marwell, is Marwell Zoo, a 140 acre park with 5 adventure playgrounds. Marwell Zoo has plenty of outdoor space, and a whole host of animals and activities within walking distance of each other. It is a great day out to go enjoy alone or with friends and family.. Prepare yourself to be greeted by 100’s of animals, including giraffes, tigers, leopards, meerkats, penguins and more, daily talks available to learn more about these wild animals, the chance to feed them, and also little cafes and a gift shop to have a break and grab a keepsake to remember the day.

  1. Mayflower Theatre

Commercial Road’s Mayflower Theatre – for this one you’ll need to check the ‘What’s On’ page on their website for the best info. Comedy and dance shows, concerts, musicals, movie showings and so much more, the Mayflower Theatre opens its doors to people of all interests. With their online booking system you can go there with your tickets already purchased, grab a bite to eat, or a drink at the bar. You’ll have an incredible day or night out.

  1. A Beautiful Walk

As well as having the sea right at your feet, there are also some stunning forest walks and field trails to explore. Rated number one and with 4.5 stars on alltrails.com, Hamble Ramble is a relatively easy, scenic walk, taking you through the pretty villages of Old Burleston and Hamble to start with, and coastal views towards the end. Take a break from studying in your dorm room and take in the fresh air. Or if you love green spaces, head to Southampton Common for a stunning forest walk- far away from busy urban scene. Put on your worst shoes for once, and go and enjoy the outside for a little while!

  1. Isle Of Wight

Southampton itself is located right beside the Isle of Wight, which is incredibly convenient if you want an interesting trip somewhere without paying the costs of flights or fussing too much about bookings. The Red Funnel Ferry service pulls directly into the Southampton docks, which are an easy walking distance from the town centre. It costs about £22 per person, but in exchange, you get to go to a beautiful island filled with museums, galleries, beaches, and shopping.

  1. Bowling

It never gets old. If you’re looking for an entertaining day out, then Southampton’s Tenpin bowling alley on Auckland Road is where you’ll find it. With an incredible 36 bowling lanes, a laser combat arena, pool tables, a sports bar, and a cafe – a great time is guaranteed. The bowling alleys of our youth never had glow-in-the-dark bowling, did they? Tenpin does, ‘bowl in the dark with Cosmic bowl’ as the advert says! Whether it’s a Birthday party, social night out, or family get-together, this entertainment centre is bursting with epic activities, making Southampton the place to be.
