Planning to study English in the UK and trying to work out a realistic budget? Prices vary enormously between cities and schools, so here is a transparent breakdown using our own published 2026 prices at Eurospeak — an English language school accredited by both the British Council and ISI, with centres in Reading and Southampton.

Tuition fees: what English classes actually cost

At Eurospeak, General English classes cost:

  • Morning classes (09:30–12:45): £30 per class, with a minimum booking of five classes
  • Afternoon classes (14:00–16:00): £20 per class
  • One-to-one tuition: £40 per hour
  • Course book: £45 (one-time, subject to change)

A typical four-week course of morning classes (Monday to Friday) therefore costs around £600 in tuition — considerably less than most London schools, where the same intensity is often £1,200 or more. You will find the full, current price breakdown on our Reading price list and Southampton price list — both centres charge the same rates.

Accommodation and living costs

Living costs are where studying outside London saves the most. Reading and Southampton are both substantially cheaper than the capital for rent, transport and day-to-day spending, while staying well connected — Reading is under 30 minutes from London by train, and Southampton sits on the south coast with easy reach of the New Forest.

  • Reading homestay, single room (half-board): £280 per week
  • Reading homestay, double room (half-board): £300 per week
  • Southampton homestay, single room (half-board): £205 per week
  • Registration and accommodation placement fees: £60 each (one-time)

These are our 2026 homestay rates and are subject to change — see the full Reading price list and Southampton price list for airport transfers and other fees, or talk to our team once you have your course dates.

Visas

Whether you need a visa depends on your nationality and course length. Check the official requirements on gov.uk and see our visas and immigration page for how we support your application with enrolment letters.

How to keep costs down

  1. Book morning blocks — the five-class minimum works out cheaper per hour of tuition.
  2. Study outside London — same qualification-level teaching, materially lower living costs.
  3. Choose an accredited school — British Council and ISI accreditation means inspected teaching quality, so you don’t pay twice to re-learn.
