How to prepare for B1 speaking examination

If you are more than 18 and are applying for UK citizenship or settlement (known as ‘indefinite leave to remain’), you need to prove a certain level of English. You can prove it by having an English qualification at B1 level. The thought of going through an exam again can be unnerving and stressful. But, do not worry. Here are some useful tips on how to prepare for the speaking part of the B1  test:

  • Relax and stay calm: It is very important that you stay calm and relaxed. You need to speak your best English on the day.
  • Speak in full sentences: Do not give one word answers but rather speak in full sentences.  For example, if the examiner asks you: “What is your name?”, you should answer “My name is XYZ.” rather than only “XYZ”. This does not mean that you keep speaking for very long when it is not required.
  • Listen to the question carefully: Make sure you pay attention to the question. Listen carefully to the question, understand it and then answer it.
  • In the question where you have to talk about a topic, it is always recommended that you make your points and think about the topic before you start speaking.
